Did the Grateful Dead play many Christmas tunes? I can only find three...

Run, Run Rudolph and White Chrisrmas on 12/7/77

and they ocassionally used Jingle Bells as a tuning piece

Any more?

Does this count?

"Nineteen-forty X-Mas eve with a full moon over town.."

Stagger Lee

Seriously though, here is one Bobby announced on the day after Christmas 1969 as being "a sacred number.., more or less in keeping with the spirit of the season" before turning in a stunning 'only-performance-ever' acoustic "Gathering Flowers For The Masters Bouquet". This song is beautifully done. Maybe not a "Christmas" song, but like Bobby says, surely in keeping with the spirit of the season.

On the "Grateful Dawg" DVD Garcia and Grisman play an awesome "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" too.

Thanks for that SkyDawg! I'd never even seen that show before and that is certainly a sweet performance by Bobby. I'm loving that acoustic set complete-as usual-with interesting banter between songs.

Not a third song, but I believe they also did Run Run Rudolph two or three times in Dec 1971.

Here is a link to a you tube video of where I use a Christmas song from one of the Grateful Dead Concerts. It is short and it is Jerry Garcia playing Sleigh Ride. Credits at end.

I typed the wrong date and I was operating with incorrect information. There IS a Run Run Rudolph, but NO White Christmas.

Christmas is one occasion on which we tend to savor a lot. Various organizations give people a leave on this occasion. At home we cook tons of food and give gifts to our loved ones.
christmas wishes for friend

Here's three:

I had a copy of the "Jingle Bells" tuning at some point, but I'll be durned if I can find it. It may be on an official release. Anyone else know of it? Before they play it, Bobby wishes everyone a Merry Christmas.

There is a Jingle Bells tease on 12/27/81, Between Sugaree and Cassidy.

What is this "White Christmas" song you write about? What show was it from? 12/7/77 doesn't exist...

Thx

I fat fingered the date. It should have been 12/7/71 and the White Christmas does not exist. I do not have the show, but found a set list that showed Run Run Rudolph>White Christmas(which I assumed was going to be only a tease). A little (late) research showed that it was non-existent

In "She Belongs To Me" he sings that you should buy her a drum for Christmas.

Nicky Hopkins does a Christmas song at the 12-20-75 JGB show I think. It's just him though, I don't think Jerry plays.

Best I can come up with.
